Let's All Play

Multigenerational play, what does it mean to you? Many people think that playgrounds are just for kids. That as a parent, grandparent, or an adult in general, you are meant to sit on the side and watch. But I pose you a question, why not get in there and play with your kids? As time passes by, we worry that kids are spending too much time inside on the computer, playing video games, on their phones, etc. But what about the grandparents or the parents who are on their phones while their kids are playing? Being inclusive doesn't have to just be about the kids, it can be about the adults too! Playing along side your kids can have many benefits for you and for them. Kids who get the chance to play with their parents displayed greater creativity and higher levels of language and problem-solving skills. Adults who are regularly engaged in play with their kids realized psychological and health benefits such as reduced stress, improved mood, greater cognitive skills, and enhanced relationships. As time goes on, we forget what it was like to be a kid. What it was like to play and just have fun without a real worry in the world. Playing along side your kids can remind you that at the end of the day, we are all shaped by play.
